Nowadays it's a real struggle for parents to motivate their children to study hard or to be concern about their academics. And my son is no exception. When he gets home from school, he would read books and magazines without even bothering to read his textbooks, which he thinks is boring and repetitive.
I don't really tell him to compete with his classmates to get better grades.I just let him explore and do the things he is passionate of doing. He's into drawing, so I bought him a lot of sketch pad, crayons, and pencils.Though he's a wide reader but I also want him to do the things that normal students do, which is to have good grades.
I can say that my 11-year old son is very independent. He's the one who gets up in the morning to prepare himself for school.I just bring him lunch at 11:00 am.His class starts at 7:00 am and ends at 2:00 pm.He just goes home alone since his school is just 3 blocks away from our house.
When he arrived home, he would wash the dishes, play with his brother, read books and draw.He doesn't like reading his textbooks. But we have tons of books at home since I have my online shop selling books. He has his own collection of books and magazines. And his into Otaku magazines now.
Otaku Asia magazine comes with a poster of Japanese Anime'.It comes with stories about Japanese culture, manga, the guide to drawing an anime, sender's contribution of their drawings, and even a recipe. This is quite educational for my son too.So I just let him collect Otaku magazine aside from K-Zone.
Sometimes, I would limit him from reading magazines on weekdays. Whenever I would ask him if he had read his textbook, he would jokingly respond that"everything's under control Ma".
I don't usually see his eagerness in his studies, maybe because he reads a lot at home doing self-study.Textbooks maybe boring for him because the topics are repetitive and that he already read some information from some of our books.
He made a deal to me, that for every perfect score that he will get, I will buy one Otaku magazine for him.I accepted the deal this 3rd grading period. And, so the day has come that they test scores was told to them. He got perfect scores in 6 subjects and the highest in 2 subjects.
His smile was priceless when he got home showing me his test papers. He is more excited to have the Otaku Magazine than the scores he got.Last weekend we went to National Bookstore but Otaku costs 100 in there, so we bought his favorite magazines at Booksale for 65 pesos each for the back issues. So there, he doesn't care that I'm proud of him that he was able to land on the Honor Roll, but for him, his additional collection matters most.
