When we lived in Texas, we lived close to Dallas, and there were always a lot of options for fieldtrips. We would go to the local Cabela’s to see the stuffed animals, have a behind the scenes tour at Krispy Kreme or In N Out Burger, or check out the local fire station. When we moved to Panama, I knew all of that would change and we would miss these opportunities, but I love the new opportunities we are presented with here in Panama for field trips!
We have a great group of friends here who also homeschool. We love finding places we can visit and learn about the local culture, businesses and farms. We have gone on a few field trips already and have plans to do more with our friends in the coming months. It is always fun to learn about something new while out with our friends! We love finding out new places to frequent, learning how some of our favorite foods are made, and having a little fun while we’re learning on fieldtrips.
We recently visited a farm owned by another expat in the area and she did a great job showing all of the kids some locally grown plants. At the end, they even got to take home some cuttings to plant!
.
We have also visited a local flower farm that does a lot of exporting. We got to pick fresh strawberries at the end of the tour and learned all about different kinds of flowers! So pretty!
.
Another fun one we have done is go to a local yogurt producer and learn how they take the goats milk and turn it into cheese and yogurt. The best part of this tour was trying a bunch of their delicious cheese and finishing off with a duro (more about those later).
.
You can do it too!
Whether you homeschool or not, this is something you can do with your kids! To put together a field trip, just think of somewhere you go where you could ask about a behind the scenes tour. Ask a friend who owns a business to let you bring the kids by for a visit to learn how they do some aspect of their work – whatever would interest your kids. Go to an art museum, tour the animal shelter, or contact the recycle center for a tour. The ideas are endless!
Do you have a favorite field trip you took as a student?
