It's always a delight to see children taking interest in solving a jigsaw puzzle. Today, I observed a child at our Learning Centre showing perseverance and problem-solving skills as he turned or wriggled the puzzle pieces into position. I also observed that he would carefully look at the pictures of each puzzle piece and by doing so, he was able to connect the pieces together with similar features.
The child finished this puzzle with no adult assistance and as he completed, he proudly showed it to me and said, "Look, Mrs. V! I did it!" and then, once again, he looked at his finished puzzle smilingly with pride and satisfaction before placing it back on the puzzle shelf.
Aside from developing problem-solving skills and promoting perseverance and resilience, other benefits of puzzles in early childhood development include:
Development of finger muscle strength and hand-eye coordination. Actions such as turning, flipping, sliding, twisting, or wriggling puzzle pieces into their position help children develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Development of visual discrimination skills. Playing with puzzles encourages children to look at features in each puzzle piece as they go over them from top to bottom or from left to right, which helps them notice the similarities and differences of the puzzle pieces.
Development of memory skills. Children will be able to remember the colours, shapes, positions, and techniques in completing a puzzle.
Development of emotional skills. Solving a jigsaw puzzle helps children to learn to be more resilient and persevere, to accept challenges, solve and overcome problems, and deal with frustrations.
Do your kids love solving puzzles? What types of puzzles do they enjoy putting together?
