Benny couldn’t be happier.
Today is the day that his previous owner finally hands him down to her daughter, Janine. Janine’s mother had him when she was a kid, and they had been great friends ever since. Janine’s mom took good care of him, and in return, he took care of her books and other things. Now, after a few years of being kept inside the closet, Benny will be able to do his job again.
Janine had just recently turned six years old and sad to say, she didn’t care much about her things. So when her mom gave her the bag, she excitedly checked it out for a few minutes before throwing it in a corner. After that, she went outside to play. Benny was so shocked he could only cry.
Days and weeks passed by before Janine remembered him again. It’s her first day at school. She stuffed all her things inside the bag happily, and Benny thought Janine will finally take care of him. After the eventful day, she came home and dumped the bag in the couch where it stayed until it was time to go to school again.
This went on for days and Benny is starting to tear up. He felt so sad, clearly taken for granted.
One day, Janine was merrily hopping on her way home when she felt the weight of her bag grow lighter. She didn’t pay much attention to it and went on her way. When she reached their home, she quickly opened the bag to fetch her assignment but to her surprise, the bag is already empty.
Benny felt empty.
Janine cried out to her mom who scolded her for not taking care of her things. They went outside immediately and found the trail of notebooks, papers and pencils. Some of her things were already torn, wet and ruined. She felt sorry for not realizing the importance of her bag before that incident. She felt sorry for being so careless.
When they got home, her mom sewed Benny up and fixed him until he’s good as new. Benny whispered a quiet “Thank You” to his old friend. Janine’s mom decided to keep the bag in the closet for good.
“From now on you will have to carry all your things with your own bare hands”, Janine’s mom explained. "This bag had been with me since I was your age and it had never been damaged like this. And you know why? Because I know that not every kid has this kind of privilege. Just like people, you have to value your things because some people cannot afford to buy even a piece of paper.”
Janine starts to cry. “I’m sorry Mommy. Please, don’t take Benny away. I promise I’ll take care of him from now on.”
Her mom felt her sincerity and was glad to know that the young girl finally realizes this.
“Oh come here sweetie. Okay, you can keep him. But take good care of him, so that he can take care of your things too. I love you so much.”
“I love you too, Mommy. I love you Benny.” Janine replied.
Janine learned her lessons well. From that day on, she made sure that her bag sits somewhere safe and that it doesn’t get dirty. She also volunteered to wash up the bag herself at least once every two weeks.
Benny couldn’t be happier.
