The concept of learner autonomy is now playing the important role in the teaching-learning process, especially in the language learning field. The emphasis of autonomy learning model is put on the new form of learning where learners direct their own learning. The learners don not dependent solely on the role of teacher in the classroom. They have to set their own goals strategies, and styles, take responsibility for their learning, make decision and solve the problem. The role of teacher is as facilitator.
As a new model of learning, a number of teachers sometimes deal with the obstacles in applying this model in the classroom. The challenges of applying this model may come from various factors depending on the policies, curriculum, schools, learners even teachers’ competences.
For the example, a teacher said about the challenge she face in applying autonomy learning:
I tried to promote this (autonomy learning) as much as I can, but the desire of students may not be there.
another teacher said:
Students are strongly advised to follow up on grammar points on their own, however most never do this. With regards to the vocabulary book, students never pick it up on their own unless the teacher discusses the words in class.
Furthermore, in this article I want to share you some general challenge that teachers face in promoting autonomous learning:
Limited space within the curriculum.
Learners’ lack of previous experience of autonomous learning.
Lack of incentive among learners.
Learner reliance on the teacher.
Limited learner contact with English outside the classroom.
Learners’ focus on passing tests.
Lack of relevant resources for teachers and learners
Lack of learner ability to exploit resources
Limited learner proficiency in English
Prescribed curricula and materials
Lack of teacher autonomy and teachers’ limited expectations.
By understanding the challenges of promoting autonomous learning model, it is hoped that the teacher are able to deal with threats to gain positive impact of autonomous learning.
