I wanted to submit another photo to the steemitphotochallenge category. I love taking photos around our off grid homestead. What's even better? Telling a story about that photo to go along with it!
Pictured above is our mini Jersey milk cow. Her name is Truffles. She is very gentle. She is wonderful around our children and even our 4 year old can easily play and interact with her. The mini Jersey is very famous for being a productive and tame family milk cow. Truffles is very tame and will come when you call her every time. She loves being scratched behind the ears and on the neck. Once you start, she doesn't want you to stop!
Today, many farms are large full size Jersey milk cows. But did you know, the originals were the minis!? They originated from Jersey in the Channel Islands between England and France. A true mini Jersey will measure no higher than 42 inches at the shoulder. Our Truffles qualifies as a true mini.
The larger Jerseys that are common today are a result of generations of cross breeding in order to produce more milk from the animal. As a result of so much cross breeding, the modern large Jersey is more susceptible to disease and other issues. the mini Jersey produces less milk per day for sure...but it's just the right amount for our off grid homesteading family!
UPVOTE AND RESTEEM! Truffles thanks you!
