I photographed this Camel a couple of days ago while visiting the Zoodoo zoo near Richmond in Tasmania. This is a Dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius). Many do not realise that the largest population of wild camels in the world is right here in Australia. Around 750,000 feral camels roam our deserts. They were first introduced here from India and Afghanistan starting back in the 1840's. They were used for transportation in the drier inland areas. When the railways, and then motor cars, came along, many were just released into the wild. Today we even export them to the Middle East. The down side is that the population is growing and they cause serious environmental damage.
