Origins of The Sandwich
Turns out that the modern day Sandwich was invented by an Earl who frequently got drunk & spent long hours at the gambling table.
So...
To anyone who has ever said that nothing good comes from being a drunk & a gambler, I present to you this epic tale of:
The 4th Earl of Sandwich. John Montague. Lord Sandwich
Common Story
Legend has it that in order to avoid leaving the gambling table for meals, Lord Sandwich would request his servants to bring him meat between two sliced of bread. Eventually, this phenomenon caught on and his fellow gamblers began ordering "same as Sandwich," which eventually shortened to just "Sandwich." That's right folks, John Montague, the Earl of Sandwich, Lord Sandwich himself invented the modern day Mannwich.
The original creation was comprised of a piece of salty beef between two slices of toasted bread. Epic!
Alternate Story
While the gambling table is definitely the most popular (and entertaining) story by which the Sandwich came into existence, it is conversely claimed that The Earl more likely (first) invented the Sandwich while working at his office desk. In addition to practising his vices, John Montague was also an accomplished politician and military man who spent long hours working at his desk and did not tend to break for meals.
Taking this into consideration, it is also quite plausible that the first Sandwich was actually invented & consumed at his office desk and not at the card table where it was popularized.
Closing Thoughts
John was born in 1718 and died in 1792 meaning that The Sandwich was likely invented somewhere around the mid 1700's. So there you have it people, Lord Sandwich invented one of the greatest and most convenient foods of our time!
