It's important to diversify into other markets. I'm not just talking about alt coins. Real estate, precious metals, eBay/Etsy merchandise etc. You know the saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket".
There are entire books on diversification. Bottom line: Please don't ever go all in on a hyped up sh/tcoin and you'll probably be fine. When one industry or market is down, others may be up and it can even itself out if you're truly diversified - again this does not mean getting some ETH, LTC, and STEEM along with your BTC but other markets even outside of cryptospace
