Egyptian beekeepers are at risk because of the sugar crisis

Beekeepers in Egypt argue that their hives are threatened due to shortage of sugar, flowers and crops that bees pollinate. In recent months, finding sugar became harder after the government took control of stocks to fight the storage among the traders, as a reaction to rising prices due to shortages of foreign currency.
The bees are fed sugar during the winter to be compensated for honey collected from hives them.
Beekeeping in Egypt dates back to the time of the pharaohs, the first characters of bees are thousands of years ago.
"There is a crisis with sugar and bees should receive food during hibernation", said a beekeeper from Shibin El Kom in the Nile Delta. "So now, instead of to take advantage of the honey produced and sales, we again supply bees with him, not with sugar", added he.
The beekeepers are on opinion that the government should support the sector, especially since there are opportunities for profitable export of honey to the United States and Canada.
