Since the beginning, each country of the United Kingdom has adopted its healthcare system. Regarding e-health, each member has developed its strategy.
On one hand, the English government has set up the NHS plan. This one includes as a priority the investment in information technology to simplify the administrative process on the healthcare system. In addition, this plan also includes an improvement in telemedicine by giving to patients better access to information and ensuring a better diagnosis. This plan is the continuation of the National Program for IT (NPfIT) adopted in 2002. This strategy is one of the biggest e-health projects in the world regarding the public sector. Indeed, one of the pillars of this project was to give the patient controlled access to his medical information whenever it is needed.
On the other hand, that requires an improvement of the IT infrastructure in order to gather all the actors of the national health system including patients and the health staff. Therefore, the government has developed a list of goals that need to be achieved in the next few years. This list can be found below:
- the creation of a national health system care record service (NHS care record service) in order to simplify the sharing of medical records
- the implementation of a service interface in order to improve the booking of medical appointments
- the creation of an archiving and communication system in order to provide a patient database
- creating service interface for the electronic prescribing of medicine. For this project, the health ministry has developed an electronic platform that allows the patient to be in contact with the pharmacies located nearby.
- the creation of a patient/citizen portal available through the internet and digital devices
- the development of telemonitoring for the ambulance system. This project is controlled by a GPS enabling access of the patients' location for relatives and health staff in real-time.
