Hey Steemians,
I recently found two Australian pre-decimalisation silver coins while helping to pack up a family member's house. These coins date back to 1943 and 1950 respectively. Like many other countries' coins at the time, Australia's coins contained a portion of silver (alloyed with other metals) and therefore could be considered to be 'sound' money.
Prior to the introduction of the Australian Dollar and decimal currency on the 14th of February 1966 [3], Australia's currency was the Australian Pound. The Australia Pound has its roots in the British Pound with Britain being the colonial power that founded Australia. [4]
1943 Australian Threepence:
The metal composition of the 1943 Threepence is 92.5% Silver and 7.5% Copper. It has a plain edge with no reeding. It's weight is 1.41g which means it contains approximately 1.30g of Silver. It has a diameter of 16mm and an approximate mintage of 24,912,000. [1] It is by no means a scarce coin and most coin shops in Australia should have them available for purchase.
The design includes the face of the Sovereign King George VI and the tail side is of a bunch of wheat wrapped with ribbon. [1]

1950 Australian Sixpence:
For the 1950 Australian Sixpence the metal composition is more diverse than the 1943 Australian Threepence. The composition consists of 50% Silver, 40% Copper, 5% Zinc and 5% Nickel. The weight of the coin is 2.83g and therefore it contains 1.415g of Silver. The edge is reeded and the coin diameter is 19mm. [2] The approximate mintage is 10,272,000 and therefore is not a particularly scarce coin at all. [2] The Sovereign on the coin is King George VI and the tail side design is the coat of arms of Australia. [2]
