What's up folks! I've been meaning to post about these since they came out a couple of weeks ago but you know how things go, right?
The MacCoin was a very interesting promotion by McDonald's because it was for a very limited time and there was a frenzy to collect all 5 coins by collectors.
Basically McDonald's was giving away one of these coins with the purchase of a Big Mac, celebrating 50 years of the sandwich. Inside of the package is a metal coin made of brass and a coupon for a free Big Mac.
There were 5 coin designs in all and collectors started going nuts to get all 5. Each store was given a small amount and the coins were random, so chances were low that one store had all 5 designs. Once the coins were all given out, there would be no more. The stores in my area were given 250 coins each.
Prices went through the roof on Ebay from people that had already secured a set or even individual coins. Just out of curiosity, I just now briefly looked on Ebay for a complete set and the first one that popped up was selling for 75.00 plus shipping. This was the average price a couple of weeks ago as well. I saw individual coins selling for up to 25 dollars a piece.
I was lucky because I live in the vicinity of about 7 or 8 McDonald's stores and once I heard about this, I was on a mission.
I ended up securing a complete set from visiting 3 different stores. The staff from each store was extremely helpful and patient with me during this quest.
The funny thing about this is that I don't even like the Big Mac. I donated all of the sandwiches to the employees.
Each coin represents a decade from the time the sandwich came out. Here are the designs:
1968 to 1978
1978 to 1988
1988 to 1998
1998 to 2008
2008 to 2018
It will be interesting to see how much these will go up in value in the future.
