Let’s take a little step back in time...
Did you ever see the movie Gotcha?
Gotcha, released in 1985, stars Anthony Edwards. Edwards is most famous for his roles playing Goose in Top Gun and Dr. Mark Green on the TV show ER. The movie is about a UCLA college student (Edwards) who is a top player of a game called Gotcha. In Gotcha players are assigned a target to assassinate (don’t worry... it’s pretend) using a water pistol, paint ball or suction dart gun. Last person standing is the game’s winner. As you can imagine, this being a 1980’s movie means Anthony Edwards character eventually uses his game playing skills fight Russians spies in East Berlin.
But what does this have to do with anything?
Well, my junior year of high school (1990/1991) WE played gotcha! In our version there were teams. So while one person on the team was a target, they could also have a group of body guards to protect them, and to help eliminate other targets. We all had suction dart guns, and no one could be assassinated at school or at school sponsored functions. And yes, I know there is absolutely NO WAY kids could play this today.
Here is my crew. Our team consisted of the five people with arrows over their heads, my friends Guy, Mike, Ned, James and me. We took the game waaaay to seriously. 🤣😂🤣
We called ourselves the Shamu Killers. Shamu was an Orca Whale made famous by being the star of a show at the Sea World amusement park. Not sure how we came up with the name. However, we left a calling card with each of our victims - a small Shamu sticker.
We ended up shooting some girl with a suction dart while she was working at the McDonald’s drive thru. Another guy we got from my car as he walked home. We also hid under my best friend’s bed and ambushed her when she got out of the shower. Sooooo ridiculous. 😂🤣😉
We probably eliminated 20 other players from the game. Sadly, Mike (the target on our team) broke his leg. So one day while hobbling home from school on crutches, another player got Mike and our glory days came to an end.
So again... what does THIS have to do with anything?
Well, my mind has a way of jumping from one random thing to the next. Today I got a delivery of silver in the mail! What was on this silver?
AN ORCA WHALE!!! 😂🤣
This two once .9999 silver beauty is from the Royal Canadian Mint. It has a $10 face value. The coin does not have a limited mintage but it will only be struck for one year. It has the same width and thickness as the 2oz Queen’s Beast coins.
I love the texture and layering in this coin’s design. You have under water, the waves, the shore, the hills, beach and individual trees, all easily seen. There is also a maple leaf privy mark just above the hills on the right.
Not only does this coin remind me of my crazy days as a high school hit girl (🤣😂🤣), but it is also very representative of where I live. Seattle sits on the shore of Puget Sound. Puget Sound is home to three distinct pods of orca whales. We sometimes see them from the beach near my house and the struggle to protect their habitat is a big issue here. It is absolutely beautiful to see them in the wild.
The opposite side of the coin has an image of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait was drawn by Susanna Blunt. This image of the Queen has appeared on Canadian currency since 2003.
So there you have it friends. Shamu, Gotcha and Silver Porn... all in one post. 🤣🤣
Happy Saturday!
