Hey everyone! Welcome to D Wings World! Today we are looking at junk or as I prefer Constitutional Silver. The awesome and wonderful thing about Constitutional is that there is only so much out there and no more is going to be minted. Plus, if you get a variety or rare year it can have added value. This post serves more as a poll to find out what kind of constitutional silver you in the community like and how you get it. So lets dive on in!
First off, lets begin with how you are getting your Constitutional Silver. From my perspective there are three main ways of acquiring some Constitutational. The first is through your LCS and for some people this may be the best way. I am in a smaller area so my LCS does have Constitutational, but the prices are often a little too much in my opinion. This may change over time as I build a better relationship with the shop itself. The next way is through online dealers such as Apmex, Provident, Jm Bullion, or SD Bullion. Obviously, there are others, but these are your main stream and most used businesses. This option appeals to a lot of members of our community because of the easy access they have to the dealers and the convenience of buying quickly. There are times that the prices are high, but you can also shop around and find deals. Finally, the third option is to coin roll hunt. This is method allows you to save on cost, but it will take more time and effort. Due to my budget and always trying to get the best bang for my buck; I utilize this option the most. If you find nothing you have lost nothing, but if you do find something you have only paid face value, and that is the fact I like! Now, I should be clear that I am often searching for errors and varieties also, but silver is often my main focus. I have had some successes in my hunts, but I have also had a great number of failures. I am still new to coin roll hunting only starting about 4 months ago with a few rolls of halves and then a random 500 dollar box both that yielded no silver and two 1983 Kennedy Half Dollars with no initials. Since then I have been able to find silver in both halves and nickels, but as I said I pay in time and not cash.
On to what I really like from the Constitutional Silver section of stacking. I will tell you that I truly love any constitutional silver mainly because it reminds me of when the United States had true wealth holdings and we were not trying to live off debt. It serves to connect me with a belief that most of our founders had in low debt and real wealth were a strong foundation. That being said I do have my favorites as we all do. The list below shows how mine rank up at least the top ten:
Franklin Half Dollars: Like the size and how you can still find them coin roll hunting. Also features my favorite founding father and a personal inspiration to me.
Morgan Dollars: Truly a beautiful design and a fun series to collect
2a. Peace Dollars: Wonderful history and story behind the design gets it a tie for second
- War Nickels: Really undervalued in my opinion. The history to war nickels and the fact that they have more silver per $1 face than any other Constitutational makes them key. Also, they are still able to be found coin roll hunting.
Mercury Dimes: A gorgeous design that is able to be still found in coin rolls.
Barber Quarters: Still available in coin rolls, even though it is rare. The Barber series of coins really is enjoyable to me in any value.
Walking Liberty Quarters: Amazing classic design that really represents the U.S. in my opinion.
Walking Liberty Half Dollars: Same as the quarter but with even more impact at a half dollar size.
Kennedy Half Dollars: Both the 90% and 40% are more readily found coin roll hunting and since they were the last minted are often in the best condition. Great design to honor the man that first said Tax Cuts Would Help the Economy Not the Government.
Barber Dimes: Love the design and have found these in circulation.
Barber Half Dollars: The design is just as beautiful, but as with the Walking it just is more awe inspiring at that larger size. (Have heard of these being found coin roll hunting but haven’t seen any.
