I had posted about the gold sovereign that I obtained some time back, when mentioned that it was a bargain.
In my Windsor castle tour, I came across the depiction in St George's Gate.
The castle builders are really master smiths. The detail of the relief sculpture on the wall is fantastic.
Compared to the gold sovereign (enlarged from the sovereign coin), we can see that the depiction of St George slaying the dragon is very different. The dragon in the sovereign looks a little more like a snake, smaller than the horse that St George is on. Meanwhile, the relief shows a much bigger dragon, more fearsome and with its spread wings, looks more a deadly threat. The relief shows the use of a spear while the sovereign uses a sword.
Therefore, while the coin is really pretty, comparing the two, I think I prefer the relief sculpture more. What do you think?
