We packed a lot of stuff into our recent visit with , and one of those things was taking a stab at pouring silver!
Earlier in the week we spend a day with John Masterson getting the run down and doing some pouring in his shop. We were ready to give it a try at home!
Day one was a flop! All we had was a propane torch and it never got hot enough to get pourable, so we mostly had a big glob that was a melted 1 oz bar :(
Day 2 we upgraded to a map/oxygen torch that melted the silver no problem once we got it all figured out.
So it was time to pour into the wood!
Turns out 1 oz of silver is deceivingly small once it’s melted and poured, this coin sized mold was way to big.
So we tried a smaller hole we made with a drill bit! I was worried it was going to be way to small but it fit perfectly.
We finally had a successful pour! Can’t say it’s anything to amazing and needs some cleaning up but we have poured silver!
I’m sure it’s something we’ll try again one day, but not sure it’s anything we’re going to end up doing on a large scale, we’ll probably just leave it to the masters, it’s much harder than it looks!
