Royal Mint Britannia coins with an oriental border design were first issued in 2018 and were inspired by the British Trade Dollar designs introduced in the 19th century. The British Trade Dollar was issued throughout the Far East to remove the reliance on foreign currency within British colonies in the region.
British Trade Dollars had varying designs, but many had an oriental border design on them. The issuance of Britannia coins with an oriental border design offers the popular Britannia Silver Coins with a lower mintage than the standard bullion version of the coin.
On the reverse of 2019 1 oz British Silver Oriental Border Britannia Coins is the image of Britannia standing along the coast. Braced against gale-force winds, Britannia stands guard with resolve as she wields a trident to control the seas and a shield to defend the land against any foreign invaders.
This design was created in 1987 by Philip Nathan for use on the Britannia Gold coins and brought her figure a modernized look and feel for the nations official bullion coin. These coins feature an oriental border theme on the reverse as a nod to British Trade Dollars. The trade dollars were first issued in the mid-19th century and were finally demonetized by the British government on August 1, 1937.
The obverse of 2019 British Silver Oriental Border Britannia Coins includes the fifth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is captured in right-profile relief wearing the Royal Diadem crown on her head. This design was created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint and also features a guilloche background element introduced in 2018.
