SketchCrazed is an opportunity for me to share the very strange drawings I do. The common thread is in the attempt to explore new relationships of form, contrast, and pattern, and to see where they take me.

Turning an ink drawing into a painting
While the original pen and ink drawing was done 20 years ago, I decided to turn it into an acrylic painting recently. It needed to be interpreted in a way that I could see painting it, so I drew a rough sketchy version of it to see how it could work.
From that I scanned it and redrew all the shapes in my vector program (illustrator), interpreting things and adding/editing elements to make it feel right and fit the canvas. Lastly, I created the color palette.
I transfer the image to canvas by using a simple grid I created on top of the vector image. I then drew it with a ruler and pencil on the canvas, just eyeballing it and trying to match the image that way. Mistakes always occur, which I then need to work around. I’ve projected images onto canvas in the past, but I actually prefer this method.
