The 2018 Winter Olympics get started in less than week from today with the Opening Ceremonies in PyeongChang, South Korea. Today we will preview the Skeleton. This is the most terrifying sport in all of the Olympics in my opinion and I LOVE watching it.
The Skeleton has been a permanent sport in the Winter Olympics since 2002. It is not a team sport and only consists of the athlete and a tiny sled that races at extremely high speeds down the icy course. The speeds can get over 110 miles per hour and even the slightest mistake or move can spell doom for the athlete.
This sport is not for tall or heavy athletes. There is actually a weight restriction to try and keep the high velocity in check. The max combined weight for men and their sled is 253 pounds. The max combined weight for the women and their sled is 202 pounds.
The United States leads the total Olympic medal count with 9 total medals including 3 Gold, 4 Silver, and 2 Bronze. Great Britain is second with 6 total medals and Canada is third with 4.
This sports is not for the faint of heart. The athletes that will be flying down the course are extremely brave and a little bit crazy. I have a ton of respect for them and I can’t wait to watch this. I hope they all perform at their best abilities and have a safe ride!
