One of the best players in the country is back and it could be just in time for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Senior forward Bonzie Colson is healthy and hoping to help save the season for his teammates. Colson missed nearly two months with a leg injury and the Irish went into a free fall after an incredible start to the season when they won their first 6 games including the Maui Invitational Tournament. But then the injury came and they lost 7 straight games.
Notre Dame is now 18-13 on the season and is in a very weird situation with the NCAA Tournament Committee. Clearly, they are one of the best teams in the country with a healthy Bonzie Colson. But their record is not good enough to warrant an at large bid for March Madness. So what will the committee do? They are supposed to take injuries into effect, but this is a very difficult decision.
Bonzie Colson is the leading scorer on the Fighting Irish with 20.9 points per game. He also leads the team in rebounding at 10.6 rebounds per game. Colson is the best defender on the team as well and is averaging 2.3 blocks per game and 1.8 steals per game.
There is one thing though that Notre Dame can still do to secure their ticket to the big dance. They can win the ACC Tournament. That mission will get started today when they face the Pittsburgh Panthers. Notre Dame is a huge 17 point favorite and should have no trouble with the Panthers. They will face Virginia Tech tomorrow and that game will be a must win as well. That could get them to the 20 win total. The 5th ranked Duke Blue Devils would be their third match-up in the ACC Tournament on Thursday. A victory there would cement their place in the NCAA Tournament in my opinion but the committee is extremely unpredictable each year.
Bonzie Colson has had a fantastic college basketball career. He has improved every year on the court and is one of the best players in the country. It would be a travesty to have him miss out on the NCAA Tournament as a senior. But there is still time for Colson to make his mark in the ACC Tournament and earn his way in.
