SteemSports Presenter/Editor: Scott Frank,
Another Sunday in the NFL has come and gone and quarterback Colin Kaepernick is still standing in the unemployment line. Reports are out now that he has filed a grievance with the NFL and is claiming that all of the owners have colluded in refusing to hire him. How will this turn out, we will soon find out.
Let's look back though at how this situation has unfolded before we jump to conclusions on the grand conspiracy that Kaepernick is claiming. First and foremost, Kaepernick was under contract by the San Francisco 49ers. He was not cut. He was actually going to make $12 Million this year. But HE opted out of his contract, not the other way around. He actually thought he could get a bigger and better deal from another team. A foolish and ignorant move, no doubt.
Now let's look at his actions. Our country is great that we allow freedom of speech and allow peaceful protests. But just because we have freedom from our Government, we don't have freedom to say or do whatever we want with our employers. Our words and actions have consequences. If I yelled a racial slur at work, I would be fired. The Government would not throw me in jail, as I am free to say what I want, even if it vile and disgusting language. But my employer has the right to fire me for that.
Kaepernick was free to take a knee, he was free to wear socks that depicted police officers as pigs, he was free to wear and praise a Fidel Castro t shirt who was one of the most horrific dictators of our lifetimes that killed, butchered, and imprisoned millions of Cuban citizens. But then the Miami Dolphins (Miami is the biggest population of Cuban Americans in the United States) has the right not to hire Kaepernick.
Kaepernick’s girlfriend has the right to tweet comparing the Baltimore Ravens Owner to a slave owner. And the Baltimore Ravens Owner has the right not to hire Kaepernick either.
Kaepernick filed the grievance under the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement. Will he be able to prove that he is being blackballed by the owners? There are some garbage quarterbacks that have seen playing time this year. Matt Cassel and Scott Tolzien immediately come to mind. The Packers just lost Aaron Rodgers for the year and Brett Hundley steps in at quarterback, but their third string quarterback I have never even heard of. Is Kaepernick better? Maybe. But should the Packers be forced to sign him? Absolutely not.
