New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees turned 39 years old this week, but instead of preparing to play the Philadelphia Eagles for a shot at another Super Bowl, Brees is sitting on his couch at home. It is an absolute travesty that Brees will not be playing this weekend after the Saints defense pulled one of the all time biggest choke jobs with only 5 seconds left last weekend against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Saints held a 24-21 lead with under 10 seconds left. The Vikings were a mile away from the end zone or field goal range when the unthinkable happened. Case Keenum threw a pass to the sideline when his receiver Stefan Diggs jumped high in to the air to catch the ball. The Saints defensive backs fell flat on their butts and Diggs ran for the long touchdown as time expired. It was the worst defensive blowup that I have ever seen. And that ended the season for Brees and his teammates.
There is little doubt in my mind that Brees and company would be able to take care of business this weekend against the Eagles. We could have been blessed with a Brees vs Brady Super Bowl and that would have been EPIC! Both quarterbacks are inching closer to retirement and what a great way to cap Hall of Fame careers than to battle it out on the biggest stage.
What should Brees do now that he has hit 39 years old? That age is rarely reached in the NFL. But statistically, this was the 5th best season of his 17 year career. He had a QBR of 103.9 while tossing 23 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions. I don’t think retirement is anywhere near Brees’s mindset, nor should it be. The Saints now have a fantastic running attack to take pressure off of the usual pass happy offense of New Orleans. Brees has expressed interest in playing until he is 45 years old and I hope he does.
