It was finishes aplenty Saturday night in the Sporthallen Zuid arena. The presence of Rico Verhoeven: the GLORY heavyweight champion, and the overall feel of Dutch pride in the Netherlands welcomed the knockouts galore that filled the main event tournament. Although Robin Van Roosmalen defended his GLORY featherweight belt, the true fireworks came earlier in the night with the ongoing light heavyweight tournament.
Brestovac vs. Gerges:
Mladen Brestovac put on a spectacle with his head kick knockout over Hesdy Gerges. Gerges has always had my respect since he stepped up last minute to fight the best ever in Semmy Schilt, but in GLORY his run has been disastrous. What befell him was a savage shin to the temple from which he could not recover in time, Brestovac was arguably robbed by Holzken for a title, and he has shown to be improving at an impressive pace. He is a kickboxer that should have an eye kept on, his steady climb to the top is imminent.
Michael Duut vs. Manny Mancha:
I recommend seeking out Duut yourself, he has been apart of many violent tug of wars in his career. He most notably dropped and hurt Tyrone Spong badly in their encounter, only to enrage the beast and fall victim to Spong's massive right hand. Duut has sown more discipline in his diet, but carries the same devastating power in his left hand. His jabs are vicious, and he showed immense combination punching to finish the last contender in his way. Mancha himself carried a nice knockout earlier in the night, but the beating he took from Duut was enough to secede from the competition altogether.
Robin Van Roosmalen Retains:
Although there was no finish in this battle, Robin is a solid lightweight going for multiple defenses in the GLORY organization. Every fight in kickboxing will be very close, every elbow and kick counts for singular points, and the tally on a singular fight is based on a judge's own discretion. Robin represents his dutch kickboxing roots well, and GLORY has done well to promote their European stars like him and Rico. We will see what comes of the lightweight champion, but I can only expect great things.
