Hurricane Irma just did something to the NFL that has never happened before. It gave a first week buy to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Miami Dolphins. Although the hurricane is still days away from making landfall in Florida, it appears to be headed directly towards Miami.
Irma is already a Category 5 Hurricane. That is the strongest category that we have ever seen. It's winds are hitting as high as 185 miles per hour and has Florida in its sights. Over the last 2 weeks, we have seen just how devastating the power of a hurricane can be in the United States. The damage of Hurricane Henry not only caused over $150 Billion in damages, but took the lives of over 60 people.
The NFL absolutely made the right move here. The sooner that people can evacuate south Florida, the better. Trying to squeeze in a game would have sent the wrong message to the citizenry of the state. If we can learn one thing from Henry, it's that it is ALWAYS better to be safe than sorry when dealing with these catastrophic weather events.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins will play their rescheduled game in week 11 when both teams had a BYE. This will mean that new Dolphins quarterback, Jay Cutler, will have an extra week to work on the new offense and the Dolphins will have 5 extra days to prepare for their road trip against the Chargers. The Buccaneers will have 5 extra days to prepare for their home opener against the Bears.
Irma is also wreaking havoc on fantasy football owners. Jameis Winston and Jay Cutler are on fantasy rosters in almost every league. And the wide receivers and running backs from each team are on 100% of fantasy rosters. Having a strong bench will be more important than ever this week if you have multiple players from this game.
Please everyone stay safe and make sure to listen to your local government about your evacuation needs.
