For example, a typical situation that showcases absence of communication is rape and the truth is that it doesn't always end up in a successful reproduction. That's why, in some parts of the world (unlike mine) where abortion is legalized, even if fertilization took place, such pregnancy will be terminated immediately.
Unfortunately, in some places in the world, rapes end up in a successful reproduction (in particular as abortion is complicated or impossible).
This being said, I have never thought of mariage as territoriality. That is quite accurate, in fact.
