The Stone Forest in Yunnan, China covers an area of over 300 km2.

Researchers say that the area where the Stone Forest is located is a shallow sea approximately 270 million years ago, and that over time the layers of sandstone covering the area have deposited limestone layers.

With the rise of the region as a result of tectonic movements, the limestones were eroded by the winds and streams, and today they have their appearance. The limestones, which seem to have gushed from the ground, resemble the trees and the area is called Stone Forest.
