On October 22, the Israeli police arrested a Palestinian who published a picture in Facebook near a bulldozer with the signature "Good Morning" in Arabic. The officers used the built-in translation. In the social network, a Microsoft Bing translator is installed, which automatically translates records using machine learning. Bing translates the expression into Hebrew as "Attack on them." Then it translates in English as “Hurt them”.
The Palestinian spent several hours during interrogation at the police station, after which he deleted his entry. The Israeli police explained that they were confused by a picture of the user next to bulldozers, which in the past committed terrorist attacks. The police added that they also apologized to the detainee.
Facebook didn’t give comments after the incident, but on October 25 they admitted a mistake with the translation and apologized to the Palestinian.
Nothing critical happened. Any information is now checked. But artificial intelligence can help prevent crime. I don’t advise anyone to get into this situation.
