CHAPTER 4
Beatrix awoke. Because of the constant darkness that engulfed the world around her, she wasn’t sure how long they had slept. She turned her head to see Arthur, who was still fast asleep. Beatrix sat still for a moment and listened. A fluttering noise slowly grew louder. Suddenly, little shreds of paper burst through the walls like confetti, raining down all around them. Beatrix shook Arthur to wake him. Arthur slowly opened his eyes to see tiny pieces of paper scrambling across the floor toward each other. The paper pieces connected to one another and slowly formed an opened scroll that hovered in the air in front of them. Beatrix saw scribbled writing on the piece of parchment and began to raise her hand to grab it.
“Dearest Beatrix and Arthur,” said a voice that rang from the piece of parchment.
“I commend you on your ability to spell that compass and make your way to the shadow world. I apologize that I was unable to continue on this journey with you, for I must go on my own path to make yours a successful one.”
Beatrix stared at the hovering parchment with surprise. It was Atticus! The last time she saw him, he was fighting creatures so that she and Arthur could get through the portal safely.
“It is time for you to know what I have been up to these past days. I knew you must have found it odd and possibly rude of me to leave in such a hurry—but I did it with the best intentions. The symbol the firefly drew in the air was an urgent symbol from a close friend.”
The parchment paused quietly for a moment, sneezed, and then continued.
“A close friend of mine, a witch, lives in the shadow world. She sent the firefly to me. I knew I had to visit her right away. So I went to her cabin deep in the dark forest and she told me the prophecy. She told me of how a young witch and warlock were to journey through the shadow world to end the reign of the shadow creature. Her prophecy was hazy, but she told me what you would need on your journey."
“I have placed supplies in the room of a small hotel in the village. The room is spelled so that only you two will be able to enter it. Look for the Rubellite Inn. The supplies for your journey are in room 313."
"Beatrix, Arthur, trust is a wonderful quality that has no place in this world. Be cautious of your surroundings always. You may meet a few friends of mine along the way—look for the word ‘Skelealdor’ under their wrists.”
The floating parchment went silent. Suddenly, it shredded into hundreds of pieces and burst into flames.
Arthur looked at Beatrix. “That was a ‘tear-able’ letter,” he said.
“Arthur,” she said, shoving him lightly in disbelief of his attitude.
Arthur laughed. “No, tear—like ‘to tear a piece of paper.’ Tear-able—get it?” Arthur grinned as he watched a smile spread across Beatrix’s face. “The letter shreds itself into hundreds of pieces that travel separate from each other—you know, in case someone tries to intercept it.”
Beatrix smiled. “Well, that is a ‘tear-able’ name for it.” She laughed.
Beatrix and Arthur stood up and opened the door of the little cottage. As expected, it was still dark and gloomy outside. But knowing Arthur was with her brightened her day, and Beatrix brightened Arthur’s day as well.
