TV channels everywhere cut to footage of O.J. Simpson's white bronco speeding down a California freeway evading 12+ police cars and 5+ helicopters?
The reason I ask is because over the weekend the significant other and I curled up on the couch and Netflixed the entire season of:
"The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story"
(we watched the entire series in just about a day and a half). Yes, we are sick.
The series was fascinating in that it brought back a lot of memories... memories that I hadn't given much thought to since that time as I was just a little tyke back then. However, after seeing the footage again it reminded me how much that day had been burned into my brain. I remember it like it was yesterday, well not quite yesterday, but I remember it quite well.
Where was I at the time?
I remember being in the living room with my pops watching a basketball game, I believe it was an NBA finals game but I can't say for sure. Suddenly, the game was interrupted in the middle of it's coverage, the feed was cut to a police chase taking place in California. The first thing I remember seeing was footage being shot from a helicopter of a white Bronco driving down the freeway with a line of police cars following in pursuit behind it.
The news casters were saying it was O.J. Simpson and he was being pursued for his involvement in the Nicole Brown murder case. At the time I didn't really know much about O.J. other then he was a football player and I had seen him in the Naked Gun films but that was about it. I didn't know exactly how big of a star he really was...
Next thing I knew my neighbors were barging in the door and gathering around the TV set going on and on about how unbelievable this car chase was and how they couldn't believe it was O.J. that was doing this. Some were even chanting "run juice run!"
At the time I couldn't really understand what it was I watching, but I knew it was big. I was more pissed that this stupid car chase was interrupting my basketball game and not only that but the chase seemed to go on forever. I kept thinking to myself, why don't they just shoot out his tires or someting?!
It wasn't until several years later did I fully grasp what it was that I had witnessed that day but apparently my subconscious had recorded it anyways. It wasn't until watching this serious over the weekend did I really get to delve into the facts of the case. It really was a fascinating case and a fascinating story which obviously goes without saying.
It was a sad story for just about everyone involved and I am not entirely sure whether justice was served or not. Either way though, there are only a handful of events that have been recorded in my brain's hard drive and for some reason, that event was one of them...
What about you guys, do you remember what you were doing when the O.J. Simpson car chase broke the news?
