It’s half past midnight.
Damian straightened his back for the nth time, stretching his tired body to relax his muscles. He had been on his desk for almost ten hours, trying to finish his upcoming novel. Not that anyone’s been pressuring him, he just wanted to get it done and over with. This will be the last book that he would write.
His apartment is located in one of the most peaceful areas that Holly Springs could offer – a perfect place for someone of his profession, except it meant that he needed to be away from his family.
“This will be the last one” he told himself in an attempt for comfort. After this, he will finally be able to see his family.
He squeezed his eyes shut to clear his thoughts, and just as he landed his hands on the typewriter, a dreadful scream pierced through the wall that he shared with his next door neighbor. Although in shock, Damian managed to shake it off, clearing his throat to regain his composure. “It’s just probably one of their fights”, he assumed, and decided to focus on the task at hand.
With his mind being too preoccupied, he only managed to add five decent paragraphs before the second scream came in. This time, the voice was raised a pitch higher than the first, and threatened to go on for hours. It sounded so painful and unnerving that Damian knew for sure that it wasn’t an ordinary fight. His worst fear was confirmed when he heard a gunfire moments after, followed by a complete, eerie silence. He’s got a very bad feeling about this. He finally decided to do something.
He shuffled through the contents of his drawer in hopes to find anything that could help. He didn’t own a gun, and he was never good with knives. The search was pointless. His only option is to call the police. He dialed the number as quickly as possible and was answered by a certain Inspector Rodriguez. “Please help us, I heard a gunfire. I think someone was hurt. This is my address.”
He nervously gave the Inspector his complete address, the floor, and the room number and waited silently for them to come.
The police arrived at the location in twenty-five minutes. At a quick glance, they recognized the apartment. The building looked entirely dilapidated, but its horrible history remained fresh in their memories. They shivered in fear as they drove back to their station.
This experience was not very usual to them, and it will surely be a memorable one -- most especially to the young inspector. Tears welled up his eyes as he remembered the sole reason why he wanted to be a cop.
10 years ago, his father stayed in this town. He was one of the most celebrated writers of his time. He was close to finishing his last book when a drug addict committed a mass murder, killing ten people in the apartment. His father was one of them.
According to autopsy, he died five minutes before the police has arrived.
The young man continued to grieve in silence, as he prayed for the soul of his father --
Damian Rodriguez.
