The lights flickered on, another annoying sign of decay in what was once a pristine palace of perfection. I just sighed as I walked into the room, knowing there were only five cans left in the bin. Now, there's only four. I really need a rush of brains to the head, here - something has to break, and if I'm not clever it'll soon be me.
It tasted horrid, but it kept my belly from growling, so it was worthwhile. And to think I used to dream about eating this stuff. Amazing how life changes. Ambling back to my perch, nothing was changed - no new motion, no new neighbors, nothing. Not unexpected, but still unwelcome.
The 'net was as noisy as always, but the hint of others was gone. All the lost-prince, free money, grow your sex, you won't believe content was still being pumped out by the bots, but nothing outside their background noise. Some people had apparently built up a backlog, some blogs and such were still updating, but nothing new, nothing current.
A thought appeared - I wonder, are they sitting there, waiting too? How horribly ironic if so. A quick login later, and "Hello, world, just sitting here waiting. Are you waiting too?"
And then I was waiting again.
