Chapter Two
The land of Udi was one of the seven lands that made up the Amachi Kingdom. The land was inhabited by one of the sevens of Amachi centuries ago. The seven communities have since continued to live in peace under the Amachi government. One of the seven lands had to produce a general ruler of Amachi land each generation. The present situation had reached the council of seven government. Never in the history of Amachi Kingdom has it been heard that a woman ruled. Some elders from the council was sent to Udi to warn the kind of what he was about to do. After the normal greeting and the formalities, the king started:
"My elders you are welcome once again. But as much as I appreciate your visit, I most say I find it most bothering. The wisdom of our fathers has taught us that a toad does not run in the daylight for anything. It is either after something or something is after it. May i know the real purpose of your visit?"
"Igwe (traditional greeting for a king), you have spoken well," Said the eldest of the elders. "Our visit is indeed, not a very pleasant one. The brothers of Ubi are worried about its predicament."
"And what predicament will that be?" The king asked.
"Igwe, it is an issue of an heir." King Apa said.
"The only child you have is a female. In the history of Amachi Kingdom, a woman has never ruled the land." Said the same elder.
"Neither is it known that women are forbidden to rule a land. My daughter will rule this land as a queen, side by side a worthy king. What I don't understand is why you are making much ado about this."
"Indeed it is true that women are not forbidden to rule the land, but not in a situation where all hope is not yet lost." Said another elder.
"What do you mean all hope is not yet lost?" The King asked.
"You have only one wife and one daughter. What stops you from taking another wife to bear you a son since your wife cannot? Or do you really want your daughter to go through such hardship that awaits her and risk your family losing the crown should she fail?"
"I do not desire to take another wife and you will not make me do that against my will." The king said defiantly.
"Very well then, but keeps your hopes in your wife. Pray to the gods that she may bear you a son.
King Apa nodded, and the first of the elder speak spoke up again.
"Here's an advice Igwe, don't be in a hurry to coronate her as your heir immediately. Wait a while and see if you get a male child. If not she will have to prove her self-capable of ruling.
"How?" The King asked.
"Amachi is a kingdom has never been defeated in any battle. Udi is one of the land bounding the Amachi Kingdom; hence there is more at risk. We all know that you are not at peace with your surrounding neighbors. In the past, Udi's battle was made the battle of the entire kingdom hence it never lost. Now we will withdraw our support. To prove her capability, your daughter, Oma, will lead your people to battle alone. If she succeeds, then you are free to crown her and we shall celebrate with you. But if she fails and Udi loses a battle, we will make sure that you are cut out from the Amachi Kingdom, for it has to remain undefeated and most respected." When he had finished another elder began:
"Are you now ready to save our daughter and look for a male child? You are a king and are entitled to so many wives as you desire. I do not know why you have chosen this difficult path."
The king remained speechless; he loved his daughter too much to send her to the mouth of a beast Yet he couldn't let down his principles now. He now felt as though he was stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, NO WERE TO RUN......
