Chapter 19: The diner investigation
Miss McKay was questioning Captain Moss on the diner incident.
“Isn’t that just convenient Captain. Your dashcam stopped working, one of your officers firearms got stolen and there were no witnesses. Not a single one?”
“That’s correct miss,” replied the Captain, “Haven’t you heard of coincidence before?” he asked with a smirk on his face.
“Very well Captain. We’re done for now,” Miss McKay replied calmly, “I’ll let you know if there’s anything else.”
As calm as she appeared, Miss McKay was fuming. She knew something was amiss and the Captain knew how to cover his tracks extremely well. Without a word, Captain Moss got up and left.
Miss McKay closed her eyes and drew a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself. Then she combed through the entire scene in her mind again.
Attack on the officers, one dead, the other in a coma. People shot in the diner. Two more killed in the street. Recently abandoned room facing the scene. Officer John’s firearm stolen as he struggled with a man. Captain and colleagues not around when his firearm was taken due to investigating other parts. The number of gunshots that were reported were in a sequence of two, two, three, four and then three.
Miss McKay was struggling to put it all together.
'Shit,' she thought, 'This is going to take too long.'
She decided to head back to the scene and phoned Chief Barnes.
“Yes Chief, I know I don’t have anything concrete to justify a tail however we need to watch him.”
“I understand Miss McKay, however, that is not our protocol,” the Chief said.
“With all due respect Chief, I could have gone ahead and arranged a tail without your knowledge,” miss McKay hit back, “I believe the problem is deeper than simply the Captain. That’s why the stories are just too clean from all those officers involved.”
Chief Barnes sighed, “Very well, Miss McKay. I’ll give you two days. A tail for strictly two days only. If you don’t find anything concrete by then I suggest we revisit our strategy. Got it?”
“Yes Chief, thank you Chief!” Miss McKay said excitedly then hung up the phone. She had just the right person in mind. Someone she had known for some time, jokingly named ‘The Ghosts Shadow’.
