If you're not honest with yourself it's hard to talk about the 'truth' because the truth is reflected starting from the new self to the next person. Many people speak the truth without being honest with themselves. If we lie with ourselves it could be in the words of 'honesty' but body language, dubious tone of voice seen by others.
Telling honestly will be challenged not least what else lives in a group that has a specific purpose. We have to agree on something that contradicts our own conscience, which is a heavy pressure. If we are not honest maybe we can trick hundreds of people or even thousands of people but we can not lie to ourselves.
Being dishonest with yourself will have an effect on dishonest to others. Thus there will be no real truth. It's hard to imagine being dishonest with yourself can tell the truth to the public.
