It is a very long, dreary corridor. You hear a door slam behind you. You hear laughing and voices, but it is so faint you can scarcely understand what they are saying. You walk to the end of the dark, dreary hall and open a door. It is a pale yellow, hospital room. The room has lots of equipment. A basket lies on one side of the bed. A tube goes into a vein in the hand of a young woman. She is asleep, but you can hear the heartbeat on the monitor next to the bed. You hear a door open behind you. You hear a voice, "You are so very nice, Miss. You have done it! You have made the hospital perfectly balanced." You turn around slowly. You see a glimpse of a tall, handsome young man dressed in a white lab coat. As you turn back around you hear the door close behind you. You hear the door of the room where the young woman is sleeping.
You hear a deep guttural growling noise and then a horrible scratching noise as the creature tries to open the window. You try to open the door. It won't open. You try to open the window. There are bars on the window. You hear the creature paw at the window scratching and clawing to get out. You hear footsteps approaching. You turn around slowly. You see the tall, handsome young man dressed in a white lab coat.
You tell the young man that the door won't open. The young man says, "No, it can't. It would not have been able to get out that way." He says as he pulls open a safe and takes out a gun. He says, "This will keep you safe and free you from this terrible threat." He then says, "What is the name of this creature?"
You say, "I don't know. It's a creature from hell. It kills and eats people. How can you not know it? Have you been here long?"
He says, "Yes, a very long time." He says, "But I haven't seen or heard of this terrible creature you speak of." The creature has stopped scratching and pawing to get out of the window. You look around the room nervously. You can barely see the creature through the door. You see it far away behind the young man sitting on the bed. You say, "What do you mean that you haven't heard of it?" You say, "The whole town is terrified. They say it's eating people. They say it is killing and eating the people."
The young man says, "I am sorry, I didn't know that."
You say, "And, I don't know what you are doing here? Why are you in the hospital? We have absolutely no business in here. What are you doing here?" You say, "Maybe you should watch the door and make sure it stays open."
He says, "No, I cannot leave. You see, they keep this door open. Look, the current has been running against me, like there is someone asleep behind that door. I have tried everything I can to wake anyone, but no one has awoken. Now that you have revealed yourself to me, I will have to have someone in this room."
You say, "What do you mean?"
He says, "You are here to save the soul of this young woman. In this process, you will need to heal her."
You say, "But, I don't know anything about any soul. Why have you chosen this course of action?"
He says, "Because this is the only way you can save her." He says, "It is more complicated than this. You see, you are the angel of death."
You say, "Me? You said you saw me as an angel of death? I never knew that. I can't understand what you mean. I am really surprised that you have chosen me. What do you mean the choice is between me and her death? I can't hear her heart beat."
He said, "No, her heart is still beating. She is unconscious. I will have to tell you how to heal her."
You say, "How do I heal her?"
He says, "You will have to be her doctor. You will have to give her the medicine that I take, and you will have to tell her what the medicine is for."
You say, "I won't know what to tell her. I have no idea what is wrong with her. I have never been a doctor. Why don't you tell her? This is your job."
He says, "No, this is the first time she was alive. She does not remember anything about her life." He says, "You must remind her of who she is and what she has never known about herself."
You say, "How do I remind her? How can I remember it? I really don't know what I am doing."
He says, "You are an angel of death. I chose you because you can do this. You will know what to do. You must heal this woman, then you must heal the soul of the town. It is necessary that the soul of the town be healed."
You say, "What soul? What do you mean by the soul of the town?"
He says, "You will have to trust me. You must give her the medicine."
You say, "I don't even know what it is for."
He says, "You will know after you give her it. You must give her the medicine. She will recover from her illness."
You say, "How do I know I will know what the medicine is for? What if I have no idea what the medicine is for?"
He says, "You will know because you will feel it. You will be able to do it because you are the angel of death." He says, "Look at the chart on the door. You will see that she is not supposed to be awake, but when you came into her room she awoke. This proves that you are the angel of death."
You say, "I don't even know what anything means here. I don't even know what I am here for." You say, "Why did you choose me? I am not a doctor. I don't know what I am supposed to do other than what I have told you."
He says, "Yes, you are an angel of death. You must give the medicine to me. You must cure the town, the people, and myself."
You say, "I thought that the angel was to cure the town?"
He says, "No, you must cure me." He says, "Otherwise I will always be in the hospital. You are the angel of death and you must save me in this manner. I am the one that is behind this door. I am the one that is asleep. You must wake me up. If you do not wake me up, then I will never wake up."
You say, "If you are behind this door, why can't you wake up?"
He says, "Because I forgot who I was. I am suffering because I forgot who I was, who I was supposed to help. I am suffering because I forgot all about this. I am suffering because I forgot about the choice of who I was. I am suffering because I forgot that this choice was who I was."
You say, "But why do you not remember? Why do you need what I have to give you?"
He says, "Because when I was asleep, I forget that I am the one that I am supposed to help. I forget because I am the one in prison." He says, "Now I must go back to the hospital. I must nurse her back to health. Until she is healed, I will not leave this hospital. I must take good care of her." He says, "But I must also take good care of myself. Without me there, you would have no other purpose. You will see that this is true." He says, "I assure you that you will see that this is true."
He says, "Thank you."
He says, "I will now return to the hospital. Now that you have revealed yourself to me, I will be able to tell the soul of the town who I am. I will be able to help them from the hospital. I will be able to help them get well because you were sent to me. For this reason, you were sent to me." He says, "Thank you," and he leaves the room.
You say, "Who was that?"
You look at the chart on the door. It reads as:
Dr. George L. Hudnall Junior
47 years old
Plummer Street
Cape Ferret, IL 62334
Hospital Director for Cape Ferret, IL
You look at the time of his accident. It said that it happened at 12:00:13 AM on Thursday, March 12th. You also look at the hospital facility hours. It states that the hospital is closed at 10:00:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 11:30:00 AM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and that it accepts no walk-in patients at all hours. You realize that your mentor is in the hospital. He said he is the one that is asleep behind the door.
You say, "Who is this? How do I know what he means by the soul of the town?"
You try to remember what this course of action is all about. Dare you believe what you just saw? Or are you just being played a fool? You ask yourself the very same question.
