Spanning the Singapore River at Robertson Quay, this pedestrian bridge is one of the most vibrant and artistic landmarks in the city.
A bridge too colourful
The shape of the “Alkaff Bridge” resembles that of a traditional “tongkang” river boat, which plied the rivers of Singapore a century ago. The design, however, is far from traditional. A few years after the bridge was built, the Filipino artist Pacita Abad painted it in vibrant colours with bold, swirling designs.
While the night lighting (and maybe my camera’s flash) make the structure appear red, it actually has 6 base colors – yellow, pink, red, green, blue and orange.
