While taking the scenic route over mountain roads to Lombok Airport, we passed this lively and colorful wedding procession.
Turn off, then drop off
After spending 2 weeks on Gili Trawangan, I took a ferry back to Sengigi, from where I had arranged a taxi to the airport. Since I had over half a day before my flight, I arranged with the taxi driver to turn off the highway, and take me on a private tour of some coastal roads and smaller mountain lanes.
Traffic jam on road less travelled
While cruising along a deserted stretch of country road, we came across this “traffic jam” – caused by a wedding procession that took up most of the narrow road. As you can see, the wedding party was not really making any progress, just lingering around while observing certain rituals and celebrating the marriage. (Note – Everyone in the wedding procession was on foot. The other cars were, like us, simply caught in the “traffic jam.”)
After a few minutes, the festive party proceeded along the road, albeit slowly, and we continued on our way.
Lesson learned – If you have plenty of time, take the road less travelled. You’ll see more color and more beauty.
