Venice (Italian: Venetian city in Italy, Venetian region of northern Italy, and the former Venetian Republic and the Patriarchate of Venice.) In the marshy Velence lagoon on the north Adriatic coast lies 118 smaller and larger islands, two major rivers, and the Piave estuary.
The archipelago is somewhat more than 7 km2. The "comune" area, however, is much larger, including the Burano, Murano, Torcello islands inside the lagoon - with many smaller islands - and Lido and Pellestrina towards the high seas.
The city is often visited by the "Queen of the Adriatic", the "City of Water" and the "City of Light".
