Sometimes childhood is not about a steamy cheeseburger you are allowed to eat in McDonald's, or about how many kilograms of LEGO bricks your parents can buy.
Sometimes it’s not about careless dreaming or playing with your friends until nightfall. Even if maybe it’s hard to believe, childhood is not always about innocence, about a warm blanket and a cozy pillow, or about the stories a grandfather use to tell before falling asleep.
Sometimes childhood is uneven, cruel and unforgiving. Sometimes is about finding the next piece of bread to feed you, your brothers and sisters. And it can be about cutting bushes all day long, so in the cold winter evenings, a small fire can burn. Sometimes childhood is a short story of survival of the fittest. It can be about growing up without parents. It can be about sewers and calling that place “home”.
Sometimes childhood can be about destroying children instead of protecting them.
Sometimes we can be the change for them. Sometimes even a warm hug or a bag of sweets can create a million moments of happiness for them.
Childhood is the gift life gives us in advance for the pains we will suffer in adulthood. Unfortunately, some are deprived of that gift.
I wish I could change that. Even for one soul......
