Hello students,
I am going back to school for an MSc January, and I (along with a friend) have been planning and developing an idea for a student group on campus focusing on blockchain and cryptocurrency (yes, bitcoin).
This is not a fad group. I have been interested and invested in bitcoin and blockchain for a long time. I review Initial Coin Offerings for an ICO rating company, and am an Advisor to Dentacoin. I have convinced friends and family to invest by explaining what is actually so genius about blockchain (which the media seems to be failing to do- as many still think it is a scam and just used to fund illicit activities).
My point is this group would be for people who truly appreciate and understand (or want to understand) how disruptive this technology (blockchain) could be. Blockchain enthusiasts, as I call them. Not people just trying to make money fast…although that is of course a welcome bonus to being an early adopter.
The main mission of the group is to foster ongoing education in crypto technologies. I have already written down a number of ideas, and want the group to include a few different branches to accommodate different aspects of the crypto space, including ICOs, investing using FA, TA and SA, and research. If there are any math or CS majors who wanted to delve really deep into coding aspects (Solidity, smart contract code, etc), we would love to include them as well.
To supplement the mission of providing education and collaboration in crypto technology, my future vision is for the group to fund itself to go on trips to some major blockchain conferences (this would be a limited number of members, selected in a fair process / lottery). Members who go to each conference would come back and present what they learned, that material distributed to the group members, website/blog etc etc.
I have thought of a few ways for us to generate these funds, without student -provided money (University wouldn't allow this), while learning about cryptocurrency investing (this would be an example of the investing/ ICO branch's method of contributing to the fund). Many other routes as well, fundraising, etc.
Obviously this is ambitious and I expect this would take a few years to reach this point.
Anyways I don't want too much more, so if anyone is interested I would love to meet you and start some conversations. Email me directly at cryptoreedus@protonmail.com
Right now we are two – we need 10 dedicated members before we can apply to make it official. Would prefer to have 20 and have qualified people for all the executive positions, including someone with prior student group experience.
