There are many strange phrases that are said in the english language that sound one way but really mean a totally different thing. This is especially true between different english speaking cultures. In the UK for instance they drink tea and eat biscuits. Where in the USA you wouldn't do anything but butter a biscuit or put sausage or bacon on it like a sandwich. To the British biscuit refers to a cookie or cracker like edible delight and to an American it is a fluffy bread sliced down the middle and made into a breakfast sandwich with bacon and butter and eggs. Sometimes biscuits in the USA are eaten with jellies also.
The Dog Days Of Summer
No matter what the english speaking culture we all probably call a dog a dog and for the most part we are talking about a 4 legged family pet. I think in german they are called frankfurters and some places in Europe also call them frankfurters instead of hot dogs or dogs.
Most all would agree that a day is a unit of time. In many english speaking places a day is thought to be 24hrs. Some people will refer to the good ole days referring to a time in history. But for the most part we all know what a day is. We all generally follow a grecco roman style calendar with 7 days to a week and an average of 365 days to a year etc.
Summer is generally thought of a warm season in much of the word. It is often the time when people can eat from a fresh garden. Many will play in a pool or go to the beach and enjoy the cool water. Some people take vacations or holidays in the summer. Often kids are out of school in the summer and can do more traveling. Summer is generally thought of as a season no matter how you spend it. Calvin Harris made a song about the summer and it is one of my favorites..
The Dog Days Of Summer
To many people the dogs days of summer describe an exhaustive state of being. They often use the phrase to describe the worst part of the summer where it is sizzling hot and being outside takes your breath away. The dog days of summer is the time that wearing deodorant really doesn't matter because it will not last longer than 5 minutes if you are working outside. The dog days of summer are thought to be the times when it is so hot that you will not even see a dog moving about. There are times especially in the Southern United States where temperatures exceed 100 degrees for multiple days. When this occurs you will rarely see a dog doing anything but lying around during the middle ofthe day.
Though the dog days of summer phrase is often used to describe the crazy heat in different places like Australia mate. The real meaning of the dog days of summer is complex and cryptic. There are many websites that can explain it better than I can for sure. I'm kinda like the local weather guy that just says the phrase, "Dog days of summer," because it sounds cool.
