Whether you're an advanced surfer, or just a beginner, there is a lot to say about creating your own surfboard from scratch.
My friend and I have been dedicating a substantial amount of our free time towards improving our surfing abilities, trying out new breaks, and learning all about surfboard design ever since we moved to LA last summer.
While I had been exposed to surfing before, I hadn't really ever taken it seriously or thought about making my own board until recently, when my friend and I decided that moving from Colorado to LA meant we had to give the whole surf culture thing a go.
Why consider building our own boards now?
1 - It's much cheaper than buying in any surf shop, website, or from a local shaper
2 - It makes you a better surfer, since you're able to understand what components of a board design affect which function while riding a wave
3 - Most importantly, it's fun!
My friend and I have been on several camping trips up and down the California coast these past few months and it's been a great way to spend our free time. Below is a photo from our trip down to San Elijo last fall.
There are worse things out there than experiencing the outdoors in arguably the most beautiful coastline in the world. Don't you agree?
Anyhow, what has started out as a general hobby has now turned into something we talk about every day. Especially as summer arrives and the swell drops off, we will be spending even more time thinking about and working on different surfboards.
Hopefully we can garner a group of fellow surfers or motivate you guys to dive in and start creating your own boards!
