It’s been one week of Plastic Aware July and it’s been pretty eye opening, admittedly we haven’t attempted a full grocery shop yet and I’ve only been to the supermarket once and the farmers‘ market.
When you start looking plastic it’s seriously everywhere, I went to look at quick and lazy lunch options and I might have previously bought vegetarian burgers or falafels with some bread rolls but ALL of that was wrapped in plastic. It seemed like the whole fridge of vegetarian protein substitutes was packed in plastic : tofu, tempeh, falafels, faux meat plus all the meat free burgers patties and ‘sausages’.
Some of the plastic we’ve generated was officially purchased in June...I’m just trying to justify myself here
I already discussed dairy in the last post and for now the milk is staying, we did make yoghurt but it turned out thin and stringy, we skipped picking up more cheese.
I think the nacho packet is the terrible micro layers of foil and plastic, which recycling would I even put that in? Soft plastic or foil. Same with the almond milk container, paper or plastic?
The only things that came into the house were more almond milk and more milk plus unpackaged fruit and vegetables.
I’m a bit worried about the next week or so as were going away in the camper so no farmers’ market and we’ll be travelling out in country NSW so there are less choices. I’ll try to get what we can before we leave but the fridge is only tiny!
