Song Review
There are so many artists who continue to make music as if Corona isn’t happening and I’m getting sick of it. It’s really refreshing to finally hear a track that sounds like the present we all have to deal with and the future that is coming for all of us.
This song basically tells the story of an artist trying to deal with writer’s block and while this doesn’t sound like something that is appealing to an audience under normal circumstances, I believe this is exactly what the world needs to hear and what we need more of since we find ourselves in a never-ending episode of ‘Black Mirror’… As many creatives all over the world surely face their own version of writer’s block, it is refreshing to see and hear a tune that manages to take you on a journey and explores new possibilities.
The song starts off with some catchy synth sounds mixed with a little vocals and I want to stress the importance of watching the music video while listening to the song at the same time, as I feel it goes together perfectly. This is something that becomes increasingly obvious as the song progresses.
Once the song starts properly at about 1 minute we get to see an animated inside view of what I would call the artists mind and I love how the scene in the video switches from black and white to color at about 1:20 when the word ‘imagination’ is sung. The word I would use to describe this song is ‘trippy’, yet at the same time there is a structure to it that brings in a certain amount of order that is always needed to balance chaos. This is something that many artists (and people in general) don’t seem to understand; both yin (darkness) and yang (light) is needed in order for things to balance, this includes writing a piece of music that works. This is one of those rare pieces of music illustrates this very well.
During the middle of the song I believe the artist experiences something that could be described as the end of a writer’s block, as color and imagination enters the mind once again, seemingly by itself. The song ends with the same audience staring at the artist in her studio that you can see at the beginning of the song, but this time the audience is more distorted. As the track ends the image zooms out, away from the audience. I (kind of) want to believe that this means that the artist overcomes the writer’s block by focussing on themselves and their imagination, rather than trying to please an audience.
The vocal performance by echolily is strong, yet not overpowering and the entire track is mixed and mastered to very high standards. The synth sounds compliment the vocals and the beat carries you throughout parts of the song, while other parts don’t have any drums. The mixture of instruments is very well balanced, which is something that many artists cannot do well in my opinion.
So after having listened to this song for many times and watching the video I can only recommend you check out this amazing song that will take you on a journey and it may even help you overcome your writer’s block if you have one.
