Hola de nuevo viajeras y viajeros espero se encuentren muy bien el día de hoy; he vuelto de mis vacaciones y quiero desearle un Feliz Año nuevo a todos lleno de buenas vibras y salud. Esta vez viajaremos a la Tierra Media y a Arda para conocer mucho más sobre el fascinante mundo de fantasía de Tolkien.
Este será un escrito un tanto diferente ya que hoy exploraremos un poco sobre la geografía de Arda y del mundo de la Tierra Media, conoceremos un poco sobre el mapa del mundo conocido y las diferentes zonas geográficas que existieron a lo largo de la historia.
Espero que este escrito sea de su agrado, nuevamente quiero agradecer mucho todo el cariño y el apoyo recibido por mi trabajo la verdad me motiva muchísimo a seguir haciendo contenido a pesar de todos los problemas de conexión que he venido teniendo. Sin más que decir vamos a ello espero lo disfruten mucho.
Hello again travelers, I hope you are feeling well today; I'm back from my vacations and I want to wish you all a Happy New Year full of good vibes and health. This time we will travel to Middle Earth and Arda to learn much more about Tolkien's fascinating fantasy world.
This will be a little different because today we will explore a little about the geography of Arda and the world of Middle Earth, we will know a little about the map of the known world and the different geographical areas that existed throughout history.
I hope this writing is to your liking, again I want to thank all the love and support received for my work, the truth motivates me a lot to continue making content despite all the connection problems I've been having. Without further ado, I hope you enjoy it very much.
La cartografía de la Tierra Media y de Arda | The mapping of Middle-earth and Arda
Si has leído el Silmarilion, el Señor de los Anillos o el Hobbit seguro te has dado cuenta del mapa que se nos muestra al principio de los libros que nos da una idea de donde ocurren los acontecimientos, el dichos mapas se nos muestran ríos, nombres de montañas y se nos detallan y describen a lo largo de la lectura.
Estos mapas nos da una idea más o menos clara de cómo está estructurada la geografía de Arda, y en todo el universo de la Tierra Media hay un total de seis mapas oficiales que podemos considerar los “verdaderos mapas” de todo el mundo que son los siguientes;
El mapa de las tierras de Beleriand
El mapa de la isla de Númenor
El mapa de las Tierras del Bosque Negro y a Montaña Solitaria
Los tres mapas del Señor de los Anillos que vendrían siendo los de Gondor y Rohan, la Comarca y el Oeste de la Tierra Media
A pesar de esta vasta cantidad de lugares, no toda Arda ha sido cartografiada, las tierras más al Este no son del todo conocidas al igual que las tierras pertenecientes a Morgoth y aledañas a su fortaleza en Angband.
Por increíble que parezca otro lugar que no está cartografiado son las tierras imperecederas de Valinor así como también el paso de hielo del Helcaraxë que fue el paso que tomaron los elfos Noldor comandados por Fingolfin para llegar a la Tierra Media.
Hago esta aclaración ya que en internet podemos encontrar infinidades de mapas no oficiales que pueden contener una cierta cantidad de inexactitudes con respecto a los originales.
If you have read the Silmarilion, the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit surely you have noticed the map that is shown at the beginning of the books that gives us an idea of where events occur, these maps show us rivers, names of mountains and we are detailed and described throughout the reading.
These maps give us a more or less clear idea of how the geography of Arda is structured, and throughout the universe of Middle-earth there are a total of six official maps that we can consider the "real maps" of the whole world which are as follows;
The map of the lands of Beleriand
The map of the island of Númenor
The map of the Lands of the Black Forest and the Lonely Mountain
The three maps of the Lord of the Rings which would be those of Gondor and Rohan, the Shire and the West of Middle-earth.
Despite this vast amount of places, not all of Arda has been mapped, the lands further east are not fully known as well as the lands belonging to Morgoth and around his stronghold in Angband.
Incredible as it may seem, another place that has not been mapped are the imperishable lands of Valinor as well as the ice pass of Helcaraxë, which was the passage taken by the Noldor elves commanded by Fingolfin to reach Middle-earth.
I make this clarification because on the internet we can find an infinite number of unofficial maps that may contain a certain amount of inaccuracies with respect to the originals.
Lugares no cartografiados y pequeños errores | Unmapped locations and small errors
Como ya he dicho hay lugares que del mundo conocido que no fueron cartografiados y cuyas regiones y geografía no conocemos con exactitud sin embargo lugares como Angband tienen una posición más o menos aproximada descrita en los libros, Angband por ejemplo se encontraba a más o menos ciento cincuenta leguas al norte desde Doriath la región más central de Beleriand.
Hay mapas que describen la posición de ciertos lugares con proximidades muy incorrectas, con Angband por ejemplo existen mapas donde la proximidad de las tierras de Morgoth con las de Beleriand es exageradamente poco, casi a un tiro de piedra cuando la realidad es que estaban mucho más apartadas entre sí.
As I have already said there are places in the known world that were not mapped and whose regions and geography we do not know exactly, however places like Angband have a more or less approximate position described in the books, Angband for example was more or less one hundred and fifty leagues north from Doriath, the most central region of Beleriand.
There are maps that describe the position of certain places with very incorrect proximities, with Angband for example there are maps where the proximity of the lands of Morgoth with those of Beleriand is exaggeratedly little, almost a stone's throw away when the reality is that they were much more distant from each other.
La distancia entre Valinor y la Tierra Media | The distance between Valinor and Middle Earth
Lo mismo pasa con la proximidad entre Valinor y el continente de la Tierra Media pues en algunos mapas no oficiales la distancia entre ambas es muy corta cuando la realidad es que su separación es bastante extensa por el mar, de hecho, la extensión real es desconocida, pero sabemos que las distancias eran considerables.
Otro error usual es situar el mapa de la Tierra Media, y el de Valinor sin la isla de Númenor lo cual también es una equivocación pues Iluvatar separó Valinor del resto del mundo y a su vez hundió la isla de Númenor en las profundidades del océano, ya para finales de la segunda edad y principios de la primera ninguna de las dos regiones se encontraba visibles en los mapas, por consiguiente, una no puede estar sin la otra ya que sería incongruente con los acontecimientos de los libros.
The same happens with the proximity between Valinor and the continent of Middle-earth because in some unofficial maps the distance between both is very short when the reality is that their separation is quite extensive by the sea, in fact, the real extension is unknown, but we know that the distances were considerable.
Another common mistake is to place the map of Middle-earth and Valinor without the island of Númenor, which is also a mistake because Iluvatar separated Valinor from the rest of the world and in turn sunk the island of Númenor in the depths of the ocean, and by the end of the second age and beginning of the first neither of the two regions was visible on the maps, therefore, one cannot be without the other as it would be inconsistent with the events of the books.
Entre Beleriand y la Tierra Media | Between Beleriand and Middle Earth
Una confusión muy habitual es la de la ubicación de Beleriand con respecto al mapa de la Tierra Media actual que conocemos más a fondo que es el de la Tercera Edad del Sol, recordemos que durante la Guerra de la Colera Beleriand fue tragada por los océanos, quedando únicamente de este continente algunos vestigios como Lindon.
Si Beleriand aun estuviera en la superficie en épocas de la Tercera Edad, estaría situada en el extremo Oeste de la Tierra Media, es una confusión normal, pero las Tierras de Beleriand formaron parte de toda la Tierra Media durante la Primera Edad del Sol hasta la Guerra de la Cólera.
A very common confusion is that of the location of Beleriand with respect to the map of the current Middle Earth that we know more thoroughly that is that of the Third Age of the Sun, remember that during the War of the Colera Beleriand was swallowed by the oceans, leaving only some vestiges of this continent as Lindon.
If Beleriand was still on the surface in times of the Third Age, it would be located in the extreme West of Middle Earth, it is a normal confusion, but the lands of Beleriand were part of the whole of Middle Earth during the First Age of the Sun until the War of the Cholera.
Sobre la isla de Númenor | About the island of Numenor
La isla de Númenos no estaba tan próxima a la Tierra Media como se nos hace ver en algunos mapas no oficiales, de hecho la distancia era desconocida, sin embargo estaba mucho más cerca que Valinor de la Tierra Media, de hecho Númenor se situaba entre estas dos regiones.
Otra cosa que cabe destacar es que algunos mapas Númenor se ve reflejado como una isla bastante “común” cuando en realidad tenía la forma de una estrella de cinco puntas.
The island of Númenor was not as close to Middle-earth as it is shown in some unofficial maps, in fact the distance was unknown, however it was much closer than Valinor to Middle-earth, in fact Númenor was located between these two regions.
Another thing to note is that some maps show Númenor as a rather "common" island when in fact it had the shape of a five-pointed star.
El resto de mapas | The rest of the maps
Los otros tres mapas de los que disponemos no nos dan nueva información geográfica como tal, son aproximaciones de algunas regiones que existen dentro del continente de la Tierra Media pero que sirven para imaginarnos un poco como se verían dichas regiones.
Sin embargo, creo que la mayor atracción para todo fan es conocer el mapa global de Arda con todas sus extensiones y continentes.
The other three maps that we have do not give us new geographical information as such, they are approximations of some regions that exist within the continent of Middle-earth but that serve to imagine a little how these regions would look like.
However, I think the biggest attraction for every fan is to know the global map of Arda with all its extensions and continents.
¿Valinor en los mapas? | Valinor on the maps?
Ciertamente hay también una gran confusión acerca de porque en algunos mapas del mundo de Tolkien; Valinor no siempre se ve reflejado, mucha gente piensa que esto es un error, pero en realidad todo dependerá del contexto.
Valinor existió como continente durante la Edad de los Arboles y la Primera Edad del Sol, pero en la Segunda Edad Valinor fue separada del mundo conocido por Iluvatar así como a su vez este hundía la isla de Númenor.
De hecho, el mundo antes de la Segunda Edad era plano y a Valinor se podía llegar a través del mar viajando incontables leguas, pero cuando Iluvatar hundió la isla de Númenor también cambió la forma del mundo haciéndolo redondo y separando a Valinor de su superficie. Los únicos que pueden llegar a dicho lugar son los elfos a mediante sus navíos, sin embargo, hubo algunas contadas excepciones como lo fueron Frodo, Bilbo o Gimli.
Certainly there is also a great confusion about why in some maps of Tolkien's world; Valinor is not always reflected, many people think that this is a mistake, but in reality everything will depend on the context.
Valinor existed as a continent during the Age of Trees and the First Age of the Sun, but in the Second Age Valinor was separated from the known world by Iluvatar as he in turn sank the island of Númenor.
In fact, the world before the Second Age was flat and Valinor could be reached through the sea by traveling countless leagues, but when Iluvatar sank the island of Númenor he also changed the shape of the world making it round and separating Valinor from its surface. The only ones who can reach this place are the elves by means of their ships, however, there were some rare exceptions such as Frodo, Bilbo or Gimli.
El mundo cambia y la tierra también | The world is changing and so is the earth
Podríamos en conclusión decir que para poder comprender mejor el mapeado y cartografía de Arda y todos sus continentes deberíamos dividir los mapas en dos periodos; el periodo antiguo que va desde la llegada de los valar hasta la primera edad que es cuando Valinor formaba parte del mundo y Beleriand era aún parte del continente de la Tierra Media, así como también el surgimiento de la isla de Númenor. Y el segundo periodo que vendría siendo la Segunda y Tercera Edad del Sol que son los mapas más conocidos existentes incluso en se muestran en las películas de Peter Jackson.

We could in conclusion say that in order to better understand the mapping and cartography of Arda and all its continents we should divide the maps into two periods; the ancient period that goes from the arrival of the Valar to the first age which is when Valinor was part of the world and Beleriand was still part of the continent of Middle Earth, as well as the emergence of the island of Númenor. And the second period that would be the Second and Third Ages of the Sun that are the best known existing maps even in are shown in the films of Peter Jackson.
