Among the amusing tales preserved in the memory of history comes the story of the Swedish king Charles VIII, whose end did not come on a battlefield or amidst palace intrigue but rather, on a plate of cheese.
In the year 1410, Charles VIII was living his days in royal splendor, surrounded by servants and chefs, indulging in the finest foods. But fate, it seems, had a twisted sense of humor. His strong appetite led him toward a particular kind of food: moldy cheese, also known at the time as “nobles’ cheese” due to its rarity and a flavor that only daring connoisseurs could appreciate.
The palace cooks repeatedly warned him against consuming too much of this cheese, especially since food storage methods weren’t always safe back then. But Charles, being a king with absolute authority over his kingdom—and his plate—refused to let anyone tell him what he could or couldn’t eat. It is said that he laughed and declared: “I am the king, I decide for myself!” — a bold statement, which soon became a fatal decision.
That night, he consumed a large amount of the cheese, ignoring all signs of spoilage and the strong smell of mold. Within hours, he began to show symptoms of poisoning: cramps, vomiting, and severe dizziness. The royal physicians’ efforts were in vain, and not even the remedies of herbalists could save him. He passed away shortly after—his death becoming one of the most bizarre and ironic ends to a monarch in history.
Though humorous on the surface, this story carries an unforgettable lesson: even kings are not immune to bad decisions... especially when it comes to moldy cheese.
