September 22nd 2020 marks the autumnal equinox and also represents the pagan holiday of Mabon. The autumnal equinox is celebrated by many different pagan cultures under many different names. For this article I thought I'd just touch on some of the basics surrounding the autumnal equinox and it's magickal implications.
On the day of the equinox half the day is light and the other half is dark. It's the two days of the year where light and dark have equal time. This happens during the spring equinox and the autumn equinox. After the spring equinox we begin to have longer days and the autumn equinox ushers in shorter days and longer nights.
For this reason it's a holiday of balance and harmony. It's a great time to meditate and reflect on harmony and balance in our everyday lives and how we can manifest more harmony and balance.
The autumnal equinox is also a time to celebrate the harvest. Celebrants often prepare large feasts and many consider the autumnal equinox pagan Thanksgiving. Like the traditional Thanksgiving holiday, it's a time to reflect on gratitude and be thankful for all we've been blessed with over the year. This is a time to celebrate our successes over the year and also reflect on self improvement.
Because light now gives way to darkness we are entering the waning half of the year. This is a great time for magickal workings that focus on the things we've outgrown and want to leave behind us. It's a time to let go of the things that no longer serve us, and focus on self improvement and balance.
Combined with the waxing energy of the moon this season it's also a perfect time to plan for the future and focus on what we'd like to not only improve upon, but help bring into existence or manifest.
