I love seeking out resturants in remote places when I go away, preferably those in the middle of nowhere with a good online review. If people are willing to travel out to the sticks for a meal, then it's got to be good.
My latest find when travelling to the east side of Taiwan was exactly this. It doesn't have an English name, so I'm going to call it Uncle Lee's Restaurant, that's it's Chinese name. It doesn't even have a proper sign. The name is just writen on the wall of one of the buildings.
If I didn't know better, I would have thought I had entered into someone's front courtyard. There were lots of pretty flower pots scattered around, including some on old metal racks. Great reuse of old objects at home. At the bottom of one of rack were a few toy cars, parked neatly side by side. I love how homely this felt.
When I arrived for dinner, a group of around 10 people were just leaving. There was another group of around 15 people inside, and table of 4. Where does all these people come from and why?!
I found out very soon. We ordered a bowl of fish soup, and were told not too order too much food for the four of us as the fish soup was big. I thought that was very considerate of the waitress as it was obvious that we were visiting. They could have easily milked us but they didn't.
Apart from the delicious fish soup which taste as good as it looks, we also ordered a plate of vegatable and some fried ribs. The later was a recommendation by the waitress. It was goood!!!
Another great thing here was that rice was free and bottomless. If you think all this sounds too good to be true, wait till you hear how much it cost us.
A dinner for four cost us less than USD24 and we left literally carrying our bellies!!!
If I lived local, I'll definitely be back every week.
