Hey there, folk of this fair isle. I've been using the #teamengland tag for a while, since I feel like a token English person, what with being married to one and being in lockdown in Somerset and all. What a time to return to the UK, right? We couldn't have timed it better. Here is a tissue to wipe up all the drips of British sarcasm.
The first month or so has been hard, truth be told. Like many of you, I've wildly fluctuated between disbelief, fear, horror, denial and down right depression. Like many of you, my plans have been scuppered. We had a while planned year off to travel here and Europe. I wanted to see parts of the UK I hadn't seen, like the Yorkshire moors or Norfolk. I lived in Dorset for 5 years when we first got married, so saw most of the coast there, and a bit of Cornwall too. But we had a month planned in the UK, then we had a mates villa in Greece to go to and friends in Spain and Portugal to visit ( and
) and Morrocco too. Swallowing disappointment and VERY grateful for Somerset, but as lockdown gradually eases, we are desperate to spread our wings a little. Just a little.
We know we likely can't go to the continent, but nor can we go home, knowing we have two weeks in an armed guard hotel when we arrive. We cant keep staying at the in laws, because...well, I'll go insane. No one can live with their in laws indefinitely. We have been lucky enough to secure a canal boat for a few weeks near Bath, and that's been total bliss and A home base we feel much happier in, but we can't stay here forever either.
We have a kitted out T4 camper which has everything we need, but of course we can't camp anywhere because campgrounds are not open.
Ideally, what we are looking for is somewhere with land and not so nosy or concerned neighbours that we can park up in to explore locality. A farmhouse, a woodland, anything. Even a spare caravan. We are handy, respectful, quiet and super sensitive about the whole COVID thing. We are happy to pay within reason. What we'd love is somewhere in southwest or in Yorkshire to use as a quiet base for a week or two, go on quiet walks, having brought our own food as much as we can.
Of course, we are probably dreaming, but can't hurt asking right?
Failing that, we aren't too bothered I suppose. There is LOTS to do here in Somerset. I bet we would have walked it to death by the end of June!
Where in England are you? How are you coping with lockdown?
